In first world countires, children are encrouged and educated to become independent and to be individually financially stable. In the Philippines, children owe their lives to their parents and the are indebted to this fate where they don’t get education to be independent but to be able to contribute to the family and pay back what their parents have invested to make their lives better.
Perhaps because the Philippines is a third world country where most families barely make a living that makes poor children, usually the eldest of the lot, bear the burden of earning a living for the family. Usually these so called “breadwinners” suffer a lot: sacrificing personal happiness like finding love, getting into long term relationships and saving some part of the income for personal needs.
This is the fate “breadwinners” like Cris, the young lead in the film “Quickie”, who happens to be gay. His small income as a night shift waiter barely affords the house bills and medical bills of his family. Cris has a boyfriemd, Dexter, who’s financial status has improved when he became a call center representative. Dexter now wants a ‘live-in’ relationship which Cris can not afford. And so Dexter dumps hopelessly romantic Cris.
